What is The 1%?

The 1% is an all-in-one self-improvement app built around one straightforward idea: you shouldn't need five different subscriptions just to improve yourself. Before we built this, that's exactly what the market looked like. One app for tracking workouts, another for food, a separate one for habits, something else for meditation. Each one charging you monthly. It was fragmented, expensive, and honestly just exhausting to manage.

So we built something that covers everything in one place, at a price that doesn't make you think twice. Right now The 1% has 15 features spanning fitness, nutrition, mental wellbeing, focus, and personal growth, and we're still adding more. Every single feature has been coded and designed by us, in-house, from scratch, with no outside investment.

The whole thing is designed so that anyone can use it, regardless of where they are in their journey. Whether you're just getting started or you've been training for years, there's something in here for you.

How it started

Honestly, it started out of frustration more than anything else. Daniel had been training since he was 15 and had spent years cycling through different workout and fitness apps, and almost every single one had the same problems. Features locked behind paywalls. Clunky interfaces. You'd pay for one app just to track your workouts, then pay for another to log your food, and another for habits. It added up fast, and for what you got, it never felt worth it.

So he started building something for himself. Nothing serious at first, just a tool that worked the way he actually wanted it to. Mariusz was alongside him from the very beginning, and together they started putting it together properly. It was never meant to become a product. It was just meant to be something that worked for them and maybe a few friends.

Then something unexpected happened. People started noticing it at the gym. Strangers would ask what app he was using, and more and more people wanted access to it. That kept happening until it reached a point where releasing it publicly just made sense. Once it was out, the reception was enough for both of them to make a decision: skip university and go all-in on this instead.

That's where we are now. Two people building something they genuinely believe in, entirely off their own backs, with no investors and no outside money. Everything you see has been built, designed, and marketed by the two of us.

Who we are

There's no team of 50 behind this. It's just the two of us, and we think that's actually something worth being proud of.

Daniel Cleave
Co-Founder · Development & Product

Hi, I'm Daniel. I'm 19 and I've been in the gym since I was 15. I finished college studying math, physics, and photography, and then turned down university to pursue this full time instead. I handle most of the coding, the product decisions, and the technical side of things. Every feature in the app, every line of the backend, and the custom food database we built to rival products from companies with millions in funding. That's all been done from my bedroom with no budget and a lot of stubbornness. I'm still learning as I go, especially on the marketing side, but that's honestly part of what makes this exciting. We're figuring it out as we build it.

Mariusz Bennett
Co-Founder · Marketing & Growth

Hi, I'm Mariusz. I'm 20 and I've been on this journey with Daniel from the very start. I studied PE, psychology, and sports studies at college, which gave me a real grounding in why people actually want to improve and what gets in the way of that. Like Daniel, I chose not to go to university. Instead I've been focused entirely on growing The 1% and getting it in front of more people. I handle the marketing, produce all of our organic content, and work on the brand side of things. My background in psychology genuinely shapes how we think about the app and the people who use it. We're not just building features, we're trying to understand what actually helps people stick to something long term.

Built with you, not just for you

One of the things we feel most strongly about is that this app should never feel like it's decided what you need without asking you. We've seen too many apps that go months without updates, or add features nobody asked for while ignoring the things users actually want.

That's not how we want to do things. If you have an idea, something you think is missing, something that would genuinely make your experience better, we want to hear it. Not in a corporate "we value your feedback" way, but in a "we'll actually look at it and try to build it" way. A lot of the direction of this app has already been shaped by the people using it, and we want to keep it that way.

There's a direct feature request portal linked at the bottom of this page. Use it. We check it regularly and take it seriously.

You're part of how this gets built

We're serious when we say this is being built with you alongside us. We're two people with limited hours in the day, so the features we prioritize are the ones that matter most to the people actually using the app. When someone submits a request and we build it into the next update, that's not a coincidence. That's just how we operate.

We don't have a product team deciding what's next on a roadmap in a boardroom somewhere. It's us, reading the feedback, seeing what keeps coming up, and getting it done. If ten people ask for the same thing, it's getting built. If one person asks for something brilliant that nobody else has thought of yet, it's still getting considered.

No idea is too small, too niche, or too ambitious to put forward. The app exists because we got sick of nobody listening, so the last thing we'd ever want is for our own users to feel that way. Tell us what you want. We're listening.

Common Questions

How much does The 1% cost?
It's $4.99 a month. That's it. No confusing tiers, no features locked behind a more expensive plan. Everything is included. We offer a 7-day free trial for all new users so you can explore the whole app before committing to anything. We don't offer a permanent free tier right now because keeping the servers running and the development moving takes real money, and we'd rather be upfront about that than nickel-and-dime you later.

What happens to my data if I cancel?
All your data is stored locally on your device and stays there even after you cancel. If you've used our social or sharing features, you can request deletion of any shared data by contacting [email protected] and we'll sort it out.

Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled through Apple. Head to your iPhone Settings, then tap your name, then Subscriptions, then The 1%, and follow Apple's standard refund process. You can also contact Apple Support directly.

What devices does The 1% support?
Currently iOS only, running iOS 18 or later. An Apple Watch app is in development and will support standalone watchOS functionality, so you'll be able to track workouts directly from your watch without your phone nearby. Android is on the longer-term roadmap once we've built a strong enough iOS base to sustainably support both platforms.

How big is the food database?
Over 3 million verified food products with barcode scanning support, and we're adding to it daily. Can't find something? Add it manually and our team will review and add it for everyone within 24 hours.

How many exercises are included?
Over 1,000 pre-loaded exercises covering every major muscle group and movement pattern. You can also create unlimited custom exercises, and there are hundreds of pre-built workout routines ready to use or customize.
