Your Data, Your Control:

The 1% is built on the principle that you own your data. This page explains all the privacy choices available to you and how to exercise them. You deserve complete control over your health and fitness data, and we're committed to providing transparency and choice at every step.

1. Overview

At The 1%, we prioritize your privacy and give you complete control over how your personal data is collected, stored, and used. This document provides a comprehensive guide to all privacy settings and options available within our mobile application.

2. Account Management

Using The App Without an Account

You can use The 1% without creating an account. When used this way:

  • All data remains stored exclusively on your device
  • No information is transmitted to our servers
  • Social features and cloud backup are unavailable
  • Your data is protected by your device's built-in encryption

Creating an Account

When you create an account, you provide:

  • Email address: Used for authentication and account recovery
  • Username: Your identifier when connecting with friends
  • Password: Encrypted and securely stored

Creating an account enables cloud backup via Google Firebase (EU servers) and allows you to share selected workout data with friends.

Managing Your Account Information

You can update your account details at any time:

  1. Open The 1% app
  2. Navigate to Profile Settings
  3. Select "Account Information"
  4. Update your email, username, or password

Deleting Your Account

You can permanently delete your account at any time:

Method 1 - Via Email:
Send a request from your registered email address to [email protected] including your username. All Firebase data will be immediately and permanently deleted.

Important: Account deletion is irreversible. All cloud-stored data, including shared workout information, will be permanently removed. Local data on your device must be manually deleted within the app.

3. Health Data & HealthKit Permissions

How We Use Apple HealthKit

The 1% integrates with Apple HealthKit to provide a comprehensive view of your health and fitness data. HealthKit is Apple's secure framework for health data that ensures:

  • All data remains encrypted on your device
  • You control exactly which data apps can access
  • Apps cannot access HealthKit without your explicit permission

What HealthKit Data We Request

We request access to:

  • Heart rate and cardiovascular metrics
  • Workout statistics and activity data
  • Sleep analysis and patterns
  • Body measurements (weight, BMI)
  • Steps and distance traveled
  • Energy burned and active calories
  • Additional metrics for planned future features

Why we request future features: We ask for permissions to certain data types we don't currently display to ensure a seamless experience when we add new features. This prevents you from needing to grant additional permissions later.

What We Do With HealthKit Data

HealthKit data is used to:

  • Display your health information within the app
  • Write workout and activity data back to HealthKit
  • Generate personalized insights and recommendations
  • Provide basic on-device predictions (no data transmission)

Critical: HealthKit data never leaves your device. We cannot access, view, or transmit your health information to our servers.

Managing HealthKit Permissions

You can adjust HealthKit permissions at any time:

  1. Open your iPhone's Settings app
  2. Navigate to Health → Data Access & Devices
  3. Select "The 1%"
  4. Toggle specific data types on or off
  5. Changes take effect immediately

4. Data Sharing with Friends

What Can Be Shared

Currently, you can share:

  • Your username
  • Selected workout data

Future sharing capabilities: We're developing the ability to share nutrition data, habits, running routes, and other metrics. You will always maintain granular control over what you share.

How Friend Sharing Works

  1. Search for a friend's username in the app
  2. Send a friend request
  3. Your friend receives a notification and can accept or decline
  4. Both users must mutually consent to connect
  5. You then choose exactly which workout data to share

Shared data is stored on Google Firebase and syncs every 24 hours.

Removing Shared Data

Unfriending: When you unfriend someone, all shared data is immediately removed from both users' views.

Deleting specific shared items: You can delete individual shared workouts at any time, which removes them instantly from your friends' views.

5. Nutrition Data Management

How Nutrition Data Works

The 1% uses a local nutrition database built from:

  • OpenFoodFacts verified data
  • User-submitted food items (manually reviewed by our team)
  • Custom database entries

This database is stored locally using SQLite, allowing you to log nutrition even without internet connection.

Contributing to the Database

When you add a food item not in our database, you can provide:

  • Product name and barcode
  • Nutritional information (macros, calories, micros)
  • Product photos
  • Ingredient lists

Our team reviews all submissions within 24 hours. Once approved, the food becomes available to all users globally.

Managing Your Nutrition Logs

You can delete or modify your nutrition entries at any time within the app. Navigate to the nutrition section and select any meal or food item to edit or remove it.

6. Notification Preferences

Types of Notifications

The 1% uses local notifications only (no server-based push notifications). Available notification types:

  • Habit Reminders: Daily prompts to maintain consistency
  • Bodyweight Reminders: Periodic prompts to log weight
  • Custom Alerts: User-created reminders for specific activities

All notifications are entirely optional and customizable.

Managing Notifications

Within the app:

  1. Navigate to Settings
  2. Select "Notifications"
  3. Toggle specific notification types on or off
  4. Customize reminder times

Via device settings:

  1. Open iPhone Settings
  2. Navigate to Notifications → The 1%
  3. Disable all notifications or adjust delivery settings

7. Data Access & Export

Requesting Your Data

You have the right to access all data we store about you. To request a copy:

  1. Email [email protected] from your registered email address
  2. Include your username in the request
  3. For security, we require valid identification before processing
  4. We will provide your data in encrypted CSV format within 24 hours

Important: Because your data is encrypted, we can only provide it in encrypted form. We cannot decrypt or view your personal information.

Data Export Feature (Coming Soon)

We're developing an in-app data export feature that will allow you to download all your information in CSV format, compatible with other fitness and health applications for complete data portability.

8. Data Deletion

Deleting Specific Data

You can manually delete individual items within the app:

  • Workout logs
  • Nutrition entries
  • Habit records
  • Journal entries
  • Body measurements
  • Running data

Navigate to each section and select items to delete. Deletion is immediate and permanent.

Deleting All Local Data

To remove all data from your device:

  • Manually delete data from each section within the app, or
  • Uninstall the app (this removes all locally stored data)

Data Retention Periods

Local data: Remains on your device until you manually delete it

Cloud data (Firebase): Stored while your account is active; deleted immediately upon account deletion

Shared data: Removed immediately when you unfriend someone or delete your account

No backups: We do not maintain backup copies of deleted data

9. Your Privacy Rights

Rights Under GDPR (European Users)

If you're in the EU or EEA, you have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of your personal data
  • Rectification: Correct inaccurate information
  • Erasure: Request deletion of your data
  • Data Portability: Receive your data in a portable format
  • Object: Object to certain data processing activities
  • Restrict Processing: Limit how we use your data

10. Third-Party Services

The 1% integrates with limited third-party services:

  • Apple HealthKit: Health data integration (data stays on-device)
  • Google Firebase: Account authentication and optional cloud storage
  • Mapbox: GPS route visualization (routes stored locally)
  • OpenFoodFacts: Nutrition data source (via local database)

We do not use advertising networks, analytics trackers, or data brokers. Your information is never sold, rented, or shared with third parties for commercial purposes.

11. Children's Privacy

The 1% is rated 12+ (age varies by region) due to health and medical information features. Age verification is managed by Apple through the App Store.

We do not knowingly collect information from children under the applicable minimum age. If you believe we have inadvertently collected data from a child, please contact us immediately at [email protected].

12. Changes to Privacy Choices

We may update this Privacy Choices document to reflect:
